Discover this miraculously saved silverware!
In 1777, the cathedral chapter commissioned the Parisian silversmith Jacques Renard to create an exceptional set to adorn the high altar. Comprising a large cross and six monumental candlesticks, this goldsmith's set miraculously escaped being melted down during the French Revolution.
Now preserved in the cathedral treasury, the ensemble is impressive for its size:
The pieces are decorated with three scenes sculpted in relief: The Resurrection of Lazarus, The Women at the Tomb and Christ and the Pilgrims of Emmaus, echoing the major themes of faith and pilgrimage.
Presented at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1989.
